The Federal Reserve Board was created in response to the Panic of 1907 (and the 1870s). The "silliest thing I've ever heard" is someone arguing that the free market is a natural phenomenon and we should let periodic panics work their way through the system. The Federal Reserve has acted and is acting because Congress was and is dysfunctional. At each step, if Congress had stepped up, the Federal Reserve would have done less than they did. Vote against anyone who signed the Grover Norquist Pledge.
