When I was married to my first wife, who was Swedish, I referred to the fifty states once. She informed me that there were 52 states. I said, no, there are 50. She said that she had learned in school that we had 50 states before we added Alaska and Hawaii, so now there were 52. She was quite adamant about. (As she was about everything when we disagreed, come to think of it.)

I later discovered that this was a common belief among Swedes. Surprising, since they're so well educated, in general. But then, I doubt that most Americans could find Sweden on a world map.
