There are several reasons why Obama looked so lifeless in the first debate:

1. He just flew in Denver a couple of hours before the debate. The altitude affected him
2. H e thought he could just coast along and be nice
3. He never thought that Jim Lehrer was so useless as a moderator
4. This is why he was tired and looked down: his mind was about the night before when he had a romantic evening with his wife. Twentieth anniversary and that had to be special, it was special indeed, but he should have done it after the debate.
