There are several reasons why Obama looked so lifeless in the first debate:

All but the last I think are good points........his anniversary was the nite of the debate.

I would also add that rather than coasting I think it was part of his strategy.........trying to look presidential and not the angry Negro. In 2008, he caught a lot of flack when he accused H. Clinton of being likeable enough. There was anger and disdain in his voice when he said it and people didn't like it. He has to walk a fine line..........Charlie Cook, the noted politico and Republican, says nearly the same in his article yesterday:

Obama’s challenge is to recalibrate his strategy for the next debate. He must be more aggressive, but going too far risks not coming across as presidential. It is a very fine line that he will have to walk.

I think it would be a mistake if Obama pulls a Joe Biden. I think he needs to unmask Romney's lies without appearing to aggressive and angry. It will be a tough one but I think he is up to it.
