Hybrid cars can never be as efficient as all-electric because thermodynamics favours large power plants to generate electricity. Big power plants can get to 50% efficiency, but a car can never get to 30%. Even with line losses deducted from the big power stations, that's a lot of efficiency to lose. Qualcomm has bought Halo inductive coupling electric car recharging technology. That and battery swap is the way to go for cars, but oil is still very competitive and likely to undercut battery efforts as you say, to defend Saudi and other oil producer sales.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Toyota staying with the old Nickle batteries possibly through 2014 on the Prius even with the latest technology. Why? Probably economy of scale getting as much juice out of the capital investment, proven longevity plus the much higher cost of the latest Lithium batteries thus giving the current models a much lower price point .. Very easy to make the case against most any ICE on the savings over time. The new Prius plug in just out is on the Lithium battery might be the next game changer instead of the often talked about Volt or Leaf. Basically the Prius controls the market now the number three selling car. Good short term but might hinder the more advanced extended range all electric from ever taking off.

As to batter swap that is an added hassle and costs you just like charging your all electric or plug in at home or on the go. Great mass appeal when it is as easy and transparent as a ICE vehicle. Is it working for Tesla?
