NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. - A 12-year-old boy has been charged with assault after a woman was attacked with a hammer in Niagara Falls Tuesday night.

Niagara Regional Police say at about 11:30 p.m., a 25-year-old woman was walking down the street when she was approached by a boy who struck her in the head with a hammer.

Police say the pair did not know each other.

Witnesses saw the boy run away. He was arrested a short time later.

Police say the woman suffered minor injures to her head. She was treated in hospital and released.

The boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with assault with a weapon.
