I've been chewing a lot of sugarless gum because I'm also trying to completely cut out sweets.
Darn near impossible, isn't it. Using sugar substitutes doesn't do anything to reduce one's appetite for sweets, it just keeps you hooked on sweets. I call it "The Continuation Effect." Using sugar substitutes just encourages you to continue eating sweets -- and when you find yourself craving something sweet and there's no Splenda or Stevia or whatever around, you're just going to inhale that piece of fudge or coconut creme pie or whatever is being served.

This happened to me tonight. An out of town friend is visiting and she brought with her a package of confections she makes that she knows I love. It was an offer I couldn't refuse.

The only thing that ever worked for me was quitting every kind of sweet, including artificially sweetened goodies. I did that once several years ago for a few months. Then, as a sort of test, I tried a Snickers bar and I was shocked at how intensely sweet it was. I actually didn't like it, it was so sweet. It was beyond sweet. It was like my taste buds were under attack.

But then, over the next few days, I had another sweet here and another sweet there, and pretty soon even the sweetest things (like a Snickers bar) tasted "normal" again.

So, for me, I think the only answer is to go cold turkey again (including all artificially sweetened things) and just don't fool around with temptation.

As for Agave or Stevia, I never tried them and don't know much about them. Splenda worked in my coffee and that was good enough for me. I never investigated anything else.
