Pentium II/266, 2.9GB hard disk, 17-inch monitor, SDRAM. Business Winstone 98 score: 20.3. $3,000 street.
Hymco Technologies' Hymco HWS6266B is meant for demanding professional users, and represents a particularly good value with its bundled DVD drive, AGP graphics card, and competitive performance.
An Intel motherboard with LX chip set and SDRAM aided the unit's performance on our tests, as did its Matrox Millennium II AGP card, which pushed its Business Graphics WinMark 98 score to above average. This graphics card contributed to a below-average 3D WinMark 98 score.
Configuring DVD is often problematic. Hymco includes helpful setup sheets as well as two audio cables, because the Creative Labs solution requires separate audio-out cables for CD and DVD audio. The unit also has Altec Lansing ACS51 speakers.
Hymco provides a warranty of two years on parts, one year on labor, and offers toll-call technical support during weekday business hours. On-site warranty coverage for the first year costs $99. The company's Web site suffers from a somewhat confusing layout and spotty content.
If you don't need hand-holding and want a lot of system for the money, the HWS6266B is a reasonable choice.
