What is your field of expertise? Have you looked at a calendar?

How are retail sales distributed over a normal week?

In 2011 there were 22 weekdays in September, 21 without Labor Day.
In 2012 there were 20 weekdays in September, 19 without Labor Day. With Labor Day on 9/3, some purchases were accelerated into August this year that may have been in September in 2011.

Are sales on average higher on weekdays or weekends or holidays?

My guess us that the report made appropriate adjustments, despite you thinking that there should have been no "seasonal adjustments" for the "holiday and trading-day differences". The report used that wording because it legitimately applied.

Also, the July to August change was revised up from .9% to 1.2%.
