My modem is a firewall, router in one package, made by Siemens. But a piece of equipment like this does not tell you if your computer is sending out data. Thats where a software firewall comes in.

I use to have a very secure firewall set up, I had another computer running Windows NT and OpenBSD on it. That was a very secure firewall, all computers were hooked up to that one, and that was my main connection to the Internet. But a pain to use, had to get my friend who is a Network Engineer to configure it and update it. So when I upgraded computers I went with software firewalls, and now I just rely on the Windows Firewall and my Siemens hardware one. I don't believe Windows Firewall is that intelligent to alert you if data is being sent out.
