Yeah, that scientific mass murder thing is something I just don't get. What were they thinking? Such a lot of time and energy and resources wasted. Conquering the rest of Europe is one thing -- they wanted to do it before the Russians did it, but killing all the "inferior" people just scared the bejeezus out of the rest of the world. My perception is that the way to create an empire is to make the conquered feel like it's better to be in the empire once it's there.

I have some good idea of what they were thinking, I took not one, but three, classes about that era in grad school in history, but it still baffles me.

But a lot of things baffle me.

Well, there was the whole kleptocracy thing, so that was to their advantage. But . . . . oh, I am going to stop there, images come flooding in that I would rather not think about.
