Very thoughtful post, i-n., and obviously it was appreciated. I showed it to my wife, who is a retired CPA, and she liked it a lot. The reco is on her behalf (-g).
Regrettably, much about our public debate has deteriorated to the point when all sides, especially the "left field", often function at the level of sports fans. They want "their side" to win, even if it takes lying, manipulation and other unethical stuff.
Some years ago I went through a period when I used to get into arguments with people on line. One place I used to frequent was the English language forum on Pravda.ru. I have no idea what it looks like today, but back then it was a wide open playing field of various fools, Communists, neo-nazis, racists, anti-Semites, white supremacists - and God alone knows who else. I used to call the site "The Wild East".
Anyway, it was sort of fun for a while (zero PC and self censorship can be refreshing), but I got tired of composing posts that would never ever have a chance of getting through to anyone. Besides, they had no archives and no search function, so every post, after a while, would simply drop off the face of the earth. Hanging out here, on LB's thread, is much more fun.... :) |
