TOKYO (Nikkei)--Digital Media Lab Co., a CSK Corp. group firm, has developed an encoder chip that conforms to the MPEG2 international standard for compressing moving pictures. The chip is targeted for professional-use camcorders, personal computers and workstations. The Tokyo company plans to ship samples from February.

The five-layer CMOS chip uses 0.35-micron processing technology, integrating 5.2 million transistors on the 13.7mm-square silicon chip. It compresses broadcasting station grade pictures at a capacity of up to 24 megabits a second. The chip operates at 3.3 volts and consumes about 4 watts of power.
