I'm pretty sure the guy I bought the car from makes a living buying and selling cars on Craigslist but he had the smog certificate, a Carmax report and was willing to let my mechanic inspect the car. Also JXM went and interviewed him - he lived about a mile away from him. It turned out okay but I took plenty of precautions.
