Here's some anecdotal tidbits from my first ever iPhone purchase. There are three of us and we have 5 contracts(don't ask). My son handles our account and he informed me that I was eligible for an upgrade on October 15. Monday I checked the Apple Store and they had Sprint versions only and a 3-4 week delivery time. I called a Verizon store, they said they had a 32 GB. I only need 16 GB(actually, I don't really need a smart phone), but I figured I'd just eat the $100. When I went to check out, I found out that my contract wasn't up until the 18'th. The salesperson told me that there was a shipment of 16 GBs arriving on November 2. She also said the highest demand/lowest supply unit was the 16 GB. I left the store without ordering.

I had to stop at Best Buy for something else. I ask the salesperson if they had any iPhones. They didn't. She said they expected ~100 units at the launch and got 20.

I went back to the Verizon store yesterday. I ordered a 16 GB with a November 9 delivery. I asked the salesperson if they were selling many of the 4's. She just scrunched up her face, I took it as not many. I told her I had heard that Verizon sold more legacy iPhones than expected and fewer 5's. She said she had "a lot diehard iPhone customers" that brought back their 5's because of they couldn't connect it to their devices. Because of the face scrunch, I took it to be some but no way does explain the Verizon conundrum.
