Drug maker giant Pfizer Inc. said it is exercising its option to acquire Cupertino, Calif.-based NextWave Pharmaceuticals Inc., which develops the attention deficit disorder drug Quillivant XR. New York City-based Pfizer will pay $255 million for NextWave and then up to $425 million if certain sales milestones are met. The company announced earlier this year that it intended to acquire NextWave, and had made an option payment of $20 million. The deal is slated to close by the end of the year, and Quillivant XR is expected to be available in pharmacies by January, according to Pfizer (NYSE: PFE). The NextWave acquisition is in line with Pfizer's aim to build up a product pipeline, The Wall Street Journal reported. Due to patent rules, Pfizer lost U.S. market share late last year on its cholesterol drug Lipitor, according to the report. Nearly 9.5 percent of children and about 4 percent of adults have been diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), The Washington Post reported. bizjournals.com
