Ending MAD is not yet feasible. It may be that at some point in the future we can defend against incoming warheads, but we can't do it as of yet. Despite 30 some odd years of research. What ended the real need for MAD has been the changes in the world. But, if things change, we are still in the same box as before. With a little more breathing room, but...

It works in that there has not been a nuclear weapon used in warfare for 67 years. Despite 10s of thousands of warheads out there. To say it doesn't work is as reality-free as many of your positions.
