How about if the stock is closing up above your purchase price on good news, the stock is in an uptrend, and with the likelihood of gapping in the A.M.?

I have been applying your rule the last few weeks (I'm new to day trading) of selling at the close, only to see the stock jump or continue the climb the next day. I've found I miss doubling or even tripling the percentage gain.

I'm not satisfied this is such a good rule, from my limited experience, and am considering holding select stocks at least until the A.M.
