I do not believe that giving away a small number of free subscriptions to early buyers cost MS very much. I was very happy to get it, though. I can stream unlimited music to all my devices for a year now. Sweet.
Of course it didn't cost them much. The point is that Apple doesn't have to resort to those kinds of gimmicks to generate lines.
