When I went to the Palo Alto store at around noon, there were maybe 150 people in line (quoted wait time to purchase was about 45 minutes). I was assured that there was plenty of stock. By that time, the promotion on the free XBox music subscriptions for the first 100 customers had run out.

So multiply that by the 20 Microsoft stores around the country and you might have an idea of launch day sales :)
