I had a similar reaction from a princeton philosophy professor....the response is not necessarily due to a lack of education...

imo it is often due to the fact that our culture is largely religious...and in religion knowledge comes from supernatural intuition, we receive illumination from God, outside of our own capability for observation, and, in fact, if we rely on our own observation of the natural world, we are neglecting the possibility and the importance of supernatural divine illumination...we are being selfish to rely on our own powers of observation, and such pride is the essence of the devil....this is what our mothers taught us, and how many of us can disregard the approval of our mothers?
