Trex seeks approval for digital mammography
CHICAGO, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Trex Medical Corp said Monday it is seeking approval from the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market digital mammography to detect breast cancer.
Trex said it has successfully completed a multi-site clinical trial program of the technology involving
more than 500 women. Data from that study formed the basis for the FDA application.
The study intended to show that digial images of the full breast during mammography are equal to
current film-screen technology in determining the presence of cancer.
''This could prove to be a major breakthrough in the early detection of breast cancer,'' said Trex
President and Chief Executive Officer Hal Kirshner in remarks prepared for a news conference at
the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America here.
''There's the possibility that digital mammography ultimately will outperform film-screen
mammography, but in the near term, it's a relatively simple task to show they are equivalent,'' said
Laurie Fajardo, one of the clinical investigators.
Shares of Trex were trading up 11/16 to 14-11/16.
