Meanwhile, Apple lets users of their desktop OS wither on the vine, while they devote all resources to their cash cow, the fun mobile devices that make great toys, entertainment devices and e-readers. For they know that when they give the desktop OS the software and hardware upgrades it so badly needs, the raison d'etre of the tablet devices will cease to exist. What an enormously silly thing to say. The latest desktop OS is a few months old and is fantastic. The entire computer line (apart from the towers) has been upgraded within the past two months.
Besides, how does upgrading the desktop change the value proposition for the iPad? Once again, you're not making sense.
And by the way, when I spoke about the dual-interface issues, I was talking about the PC experience. Using a touch interface with a mouse is cumbersome, just as using a mouse interface with a touch is. I prefer Apple's approach of using interfaces designed especially for the devices they'll be used on.
I'm not saying the Surface is a total disaster. In fact, it looks like a fine product in many ways. I was surprised by the reviews of the keyboard. People don't seem to hate typing on it, as long as it's on a flat surface.
But we'll see how the market responds.
Did the Surface sell out this weekend? |
