TWT. I agree with you that design is considered King at Apple, and has become elevated broadly in the tech industry. Still, Jony's background and contributions at Apple have been mostly in hardware design. So it doesn't really matter whether you want to call it design or engineering, the difference still remains that someone with a hardware bent is taking over various aspects of someone with a software bent. Now perhaps he will do well, using the same creativity.

But when I read the general press reports on each new mobile gadget introduction and see how much space is devoted to rather trivial design elements which get gushed over more than actual useful functional aspects, I think that perhaps the elevation of industrial design to King at Apple has some drawbacks. In fact, I'd hazard that some of the recent screwups with functional aspects at Apple are somewhat related to the fact that too many people including upper management have become seduced by looking at their shiny toys and drooling over the case, the rounded corners, the black and white color options (etc), and don't bother to actually try and use them much.
