I'm not going to pile on Forstall here. Given how good iOS is (despite the Map debacle), and how much of that happened under his leadership, IMO it is a clear loss to Apple that he's gone. That doesn't mean I think firing him is the wrong decision - I'm not in a position to know - just that it is a substantial loss, even if it was (arguably) done to prevent an even bigger loss.

From what we can tell, it appears Cook was not able to keep Forstall contained the way Jobs was able to. Perhaps that's because of something lacking in Cook, perhaps it's because Forstall changed after Jobs' departure, perhaps there's a bit of both elements.

Or perhaps this is a straight up internal power play on Cook's part, to oust a formidable potential challenger.

Or perhaps a couple of key guys who just used Cook to make their own power play with "him or me" ultimatums.

Stranger things have happened.
