Yup. Except you have it ass backwords. Usabilty is usually the part of design engineers frig up. Forestall is responsible much of trivial design elements, like aqua, the dock.

I have a friend who is a brilliant Java programmer. His idea of a great design is a command line. He's clueless about usabilty.

And how do you know Ive is just about hardware design? Front ends are about design, back ends are about engineering. My guess is he is responsible for people who work on interface design.

Ive has minimalism in his blood. I can tell you they drill that into you in design school, I've been there. One of my school chums is the guy who does the HI at google.

I'm a contractor now. The best contractors I work for understand that simple (minimal) designs and quality materials are where its at. The best contractor I know builds roughly the same beautiful mansion over and over. There is no chaff in his buildings no artifice. He was so successful he bought his own bank.

IMHO Ive understands usabilty is about minimalism or simplicity in other word. My guess is he's hard core usabilty but has been over ruled. To a designer hardware design is the same as software design. Its DESIGN. Function over form is the right thing.

For example my library has changed their user log in from 1 page to 5 pages with a pop up page. Each redesign has had more complex code and less usability. I guarantee you there was no usabilty designer on these projects. Its obvious it was "designed" by a software engineer more interested in showing off his chops than producing a good make over. Luckily the head librarian had her email on the site. I sent them a factual presentation about the boneheaded usability mistakes they'd made. Most webmasters make that impossible. This guy hadn't learned that one yet. The head librarian was apologetic and agreed they'd blown it, promised to pass on my criticisms... I'm sure the coder thinks I'm a complete ass for butting in. Too bad.

Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know Ive but I've read his interviews. I think I know his mind.
