Qantas to upgrade 747 aircraft cabins SYDNEY, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Qantas Airways Ltd said on Thursday that it would spend about A$150 million to reconfigure the cabins of its 29 Boeing (NYSE:BA - news) B747 aircraft.

Qantas said about A$30 million of the total amount would be spent on the cost of labour and facilities at Avalon Airport, west of Melbourne in the state of Victoria, where the upgrades would be carried out.

The national flag carrier said the upgrade work formed part of the overall A$560 million product relaunch announced in May this year.

It said the reconfiguration would including the installation of luxurious sleeper seats in first class, electronically adjustable business class seats, and the latest in high comfort seats for economy class passengers.

Qantas said the upgrade would involve about 10,000 hours of work per aircraft, and would include the installation of new kitchen galleys and lavatories.

The upgrade programme would begin in April 1998 and continue for almost two years, with the first aircraft expected to enter service in May 1998.
