Apple (AAPL) Leverages Stance on How Much It Will Pay Google (GOOG) for Essential Wireless Patents
October 31, 2012 2:07 PM EDT

How much are Motorola's essential wireless patents worth? Not as much as you might think.

According to Foss Patents, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is willing to pony-up about $1 per iPhone for the essential

rights and enter a licensing agreement right away. The news comes about five days ahead of a FRAND
contract trial in Wisconsin.

Foss cites a passage from Apple's filing: "This is the rate that Apple believes is appropriate in these

circumstances, a rate that flows from Apple's articulated FRAND framework, and the only rate that can be
supported by experts at this trial. To the extent the Court sets the rate higher than $1 per unit, Apple reserves
the right to exhaust all appeals and also reserves the right available to any party offered a license: the right to
refuse and proceed to further infringement litigation."

Motorola, which was acquired by Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) recently, may be forced to propose a settlement

with Apple "on court-determined FRAND terms."

Trial is set to begin next Monday. Shares of Apple are down 1 percent Wednesday, while is up about 0.5

percent.
