The government spent approximately $1.03 trillion on 83 means-tested federal welfare programs in fiscal year 2011 alone — a price tag that makes welfare that year the government’s largest expenditure, according to new data released by the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee.

Politically, America is at an impasse as each party holds the other party hostage until its demands are met. The Democrats scream “we won’t cut entitlements unless military spending is also cut” and the Republicans scream “we refuse to ever cut military spending”. The military industrial complex costs us $1.2 trillion a year.
