Liberal friend was telling me a couple weeks ago how Republicans voted down the Veterans Jobs Act, and I commented that there were some egregious tax changes in the legislation and that was a pretty good reason (specifically, it expanded the 100% penalty provisions which already give way, way too much power to the IRS in certain circumstances). His response to me was, "Dave, it is about VETERANS. How can you possibly oppose that?"

And therein lies the problem. Every expenditure has a pet constituency, and there is no end to it. If it isn't veterans it is postal workers; if it isn't postal workers it is flood victims, and if not flood victims it is unemployed workers. There is no end.

Someone is going to have to have the balls to stand up to them. I personally don't know how that happens. Dictatorship may be the only way out.
