Great thread@! I haven't seen the article (is it online?), but you might want to add CMGI to your list, with their CMG @Ventures venture capital arm. Here's their profile from Yahoo:

CMGI is a direct marketing service provider that invests in, develops and integrates advanced, Internet, interactive and database management technologies. Net sales for the nine months ended 4/30/97 increased from $19.4 million to $48.5 million. Net loss totalled $17 million vs. income of $22.9 million. Revenues benefitted from higher net sales for fulfillment services and investment and development segments. Loss reflects higher sales expenses due to infrastructure growth.
