In some places it has been very difficult to make money in farming, for a long time.

I was casually looking into the cattle business in south florida...there, they usually raise beef cattle, and sell the calves to feed lots. The grass is thin, so the cattle density per acre is not that high, even tho the weather is nice year-round, and one does not need to buy much hay or have a barn.

They sell the calf for 400-700 each....not much revenue in return for supporting the mother cow for a year...most of the cattle ranches are handed down within a family, almost a family tradition, and they dont make much money on the cattle, but have some other business on the side to add to their cash...

I have a few cattle on a small farm, mostly to reduce my taxes...
