In this context, we are discussing honesty as an aspect of individual thought, ie, in order for our mind to function properly, it needs to consider the whole context of information, if it avoids some of this information (through an act of dishonesty), then it undermines its ability to reach valid conclusions, and hence we undermine our ability to guide our own actions.... yes, historically there have been few societies to recognize individual rights, but this issue of honesty as a virtue applies to an individual, not depending on the social context.... rp
