They were not only outliers, they were manipulated in the service of the Republican cause--trying to confirm the desire of the Romney campaign to show a surge of support for the Mittens, which, in their Mad Ave inspired view, would lead to a real surge. When that didn't materialize, Gallup and Rasmussen had to back down from their manipulated polls so that they wouldn't become complete jokes in the circles of pollsters and pundits. They need to maintain a shred of credibility for the next election.
