The only drawback (but not from our point of view!) being that the ISP providing the 56K support must have ASND equipment. Please correct me if I am mistaken. Personally, I am not thrilled by ISDN (cost, lack of performance). Satellite has a very questionable future and is still years away. The 56K marketing blitz is an enigma to me...such performance is merely a baby-step forward from my 33.6 ...I want LIGHTSPEED! Not to mention it is merely another phase...remember the "big" upgrade from the 14.4 to 28.8 a few years back? Fiber-optics...still has yet to be seen if this one is viable in the face of the mounting competition for high-speed access -- how many will adopt? ADSL, HDSL, xDSL...fast but still cost-prohibitive, and still only roughly 1/3 the speed of cable. Cable: 90% of all homes have a phone line and a cable line running into the home...blazing speed and only fiber-optic/satellite with equal performance (both of which will have to convince the market for acceptance -- let alone carve out market share and eventually profit). Acceptable pricing/performance ratio: $40 - $50/month (@Home and USWest). And from what I hear from every person to sign up, they are thrilled about the speed, ease of use, and advantages of "instant-on", channel-flipping page loading, service/support. Every one of these new customers swear to me they would never dream of going back to conventional modems or slower alternative. Kind of like trading in your tricycle for a Ferrari. I gotta place my bet with cable...I'm still waiting for TCI to offer cable modem access to central Florida. I'd invest in ATHM if it wasn't so insanely overvalued (looking for an alternative).
