I just returned from voting.
My husband serves as judge of elections in our little Lancaster County, PA township. He reports that, in the first hour that the polls were open this morning, 180 people voted. During the primary in April, 38 people voted during the first hour, and during the last presidential election 102 people voted during the first hour. So voter turnout, at least in the first hour, was enormous. And there was quite a crowd when I arrived at around 10:30 as well. Being that Lancaster County is an especially conservative area of the state, that appears to be good news.
Among the people I ran into at the polls was an elderly gentleman (maybe mid- to late-eighties) whom I had met for the first time when I was going door-to-door for Romney/Ryan, on and off, these past couple of months. He had expressed to me then a complete disillusionment with politics, and admitted to not having voted since Reagan's last candidacy in '84. I scolded him a bit for that, so today, when I saw him at the polls, he winked and said, 'I'm here just because I didn't want you mad at me anymore.' :)
Things are looking good, so far, in this little portion of Pennsylvania. Let's hope these circumstances are replicated throughout the country. |
