<<Democracy is fine. We need to make politicians fear the public since we can't count on them to be noble-minded altruists. But in addition to making them dependent on our votes, we need to limit their powers in office. Have a constitution to limit what they can do and divide powers among various branches of government ... the separation of powers thing that our founding fathers understood. They knew human beings were corruptible (being Christians, even those few who were unitarians or deists knew that) and if given power would tend to abuse it. Thus they established a system to limit politicians powers. Making them subject to votes is only part of it.
