Going hard right aggressively would have netted him fewer votes, in my opinion.
Allen West went that route and lost to a nobody.

One criticism I have is that Romney often spoke over the heads of a good portion of the electorate. He never fully explained the fiscal cliff, or sequestration, or capital gains tax rates, or a managed bankruptcy, or how growing an economy leads to lower deficits. He assumed the people knew what he was talking about. Not to mention his basic vocabulary is better suited to a written essay than a frank discussion.
