It's got to be one of those long multigenerational cycles. The older generations grew up with Ayn Rand, Stalin in Russia and Mao in China. The generations growing up now have watched modern China. The next generation will get to see the USA become #2 on the planet. Assuming they are curious about why this has happened, they might well question the older generations notions of what makes robust economies.
