FREMONT, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- ESS Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESST) today announced it has received design wins from START Computer Electronics Group, one of the top five video CD and PC manufacturers in China, and several consumer electronic manufacturers in eastern Asia for its highly-integrated video CD chip solution. The designs incorporate ESS' expanded-capability ES3210 video CD chip. The ES3210, in combination with ESS' ES3209 video CD companion chip, provides the industry's first solution for integrating video CD systems and Graphical User Interface (GUI) and Internet hyperlink features. With the ESS solution, manufacturers of video CD players can build machines that play both video and graphics content, thereby enabling interactive graphics functionality within the context of the video material. START plans to use the ES3210 and ES3209 in a new series of VCD products to be introduced into the China market this month. "ESS has a distinctive and well-thought-out road map for multimedia products in the consumer electronics and computer markets," said Wu Bo Chian, general manager of START. "As one of the leading manufacturers in China in both markets, we clearly see the advantage that the ES3210 and ES3209 have to offer. By bringing in many of the attractive features of personal computers, such as a GUI and Hyperlink, we can now offer VCD players with more intuitive user interfaces." "We are excited that START has chosen ESS products for its VCD players, targeting both the entertainment and education segments of the market," said Johnston Chen, vice president of ESS' Consumer Electronics Division. "Since the introduction of the GUI and Hyperlink chip earlier this quarter, we have received tremendous interest from VCD manufacturers in China. START understands the benefits of ESS' products and quickly switched to ESS' solution to take advantage of the new features." ESS also announced new design wins for the ES3210 and ES3209 combination from several other Asian manufacturers, including Konka Electronic Group Co., Ltd., Prosperity Electronic Co., Ltd., Yuan Wearnes Technology Ltd., ACS Innovation International Pte, Sunstar Electronic Co., Ltd., Zhong Peng Electronic, Keyi Electronic, Neon Electronic Co., Ltd., Mizuda Electronic Co., Ltd., and Colin Electronic Co., Ltd. The ES3210 features ESS' unique Programmable Multimedia Processor (PMP) technology to provide the Video CD requirements for full video CD support, zoom control, video image scaling, an advanced integrated power management system, and a number of other features. ESS uses its high-level integration capabilities to add more functions on the same chip solution, thereby reducing the system cost over competitive solutions by reducing the number of external components. The ES3209 integrates most analog function requirements, such as an NTSC-TV encoder, audio DAC, echo, 3D surround sound, clock generator, remote control, and microphone amplifier, into a single chip.
