I think a lot of Palin supporters sat home. Why vote for a party that disses them like the republican party disses them?

Because there are things that are more important than their hurt feelings.

Any conservative that didn't understand that "anybody but Obama" was a rally cry to head off disaster is no better than the liberals who put Obama in office.

I don't agree with the way that the TP and Palin were treated by the republican party, but I also understand that if Palin and TP were painted as radicals in such a way that embracing them would scare away the independent vote, it would be a reasonable strategy to somewhat dismiss them knowing that they (TP and Palin supporters) would have the good sense to hold their collective heads high and vote for the candidate who would replace Obama.
