The new rival of WMS
WMS may be very familiar with lawsuits in gaming industry, they sued Bally Technologies in 2010 which affected Bally at G2E. As the third largest American slot machine manufacturer, their main rivals are International Game Technology and Bally Technologies.
However, there may be a new one. MGT Capital Investments announced that its majority-owned subsidiary, MGT Gaming, had filed a massive lawsuit against casino companies WMS Gaming (NYSE: WMS), Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, Penn National Gaming and Aruze Gaming America. MGT Gaming alleges that these companies infringed on its patent 7,892,088 related to networked slot machines with a shared-display bonusing event. Top-tier law firm Nixon & Vanderhye filed for MGT Gaming in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi.
MGT Gaming will have to stand in line in the suit against WMS. The main difference with this lawsuit is that MGT Gaming is not a gaming company. It acquires patents so that it can sue legitimate gaming companies. We may really don’t know what and when will we see the outcome of the lawsuit, but one thing for sure, that is with this kind of lawsuit, MGT will be known by many investors, after getting the patent, they may have the chance to enter into gaming markets, which may have a great effect on WMS, especially on this tough time. |
