I've thought about it some more. I think Newt would have done better than Romney.

I just posted this on the board where I post my more incendiary stuff:

They said we can't nominate someone who's too "severe" or "extreme" a conservative because that will scare off independents and moderates. Never mind that the Democrats will convince those same folks that ANYONE we nominate is severe and extreme.

Personally, I think we should forget about trying to find a candidate designed to appeal to non-conservatives and go with the candidate most popular with the conservative base and best able to communicate conservative ideas (maybe that is Rubio?).

Second, we should attack, attack, attack on every point of weakness. Not just the candidate but any Democrat anywhere who does or says something bad ... the Democrats have their own Akins (see Alan Grayson for starters). Talk them up as the face of the Democratic party.

And thinking of the primary candidates, Newt, with all his baggage and his wife that seems strange even to me, was the most articulate speaker, the best at attacking both Obama and the media, and he'd rallied conservatives before in Congress. So there's my answer.

BTW I think Santorum might well have done better than Romney as well. Everyone said he was too extreme on the social issues, wanted to take people's birth control away ... well gee, the Democrats and media convinced people that was true of Mitt too.
