Lucent Technologies Inc creates voice/video over Web venture
MURRAY HILL, N.J., Sept 17 (Reuter) - Lucent Technologies Inc said Tuesday it had set up a new "business venture group" to sell software to give businesses and consumers high-quality voice, music and video over intranets and the Internet.
The company said products from the venture, known as the elemedia (elements for multimedia) venture group, will include voice software, which enables "telephone quality" conversations over the Internet.
By next quarter, the former AT&T equipment unit said its elemedia venture will provide software that enables home and business-quality videoconferencing over the Internet.
Other products will include speakerphone software, which grants true full, two-way conversational capabilities to PCs and Internet phone devices.
In addition, Lucent plans to offer FM stereo/compact-disc quality audio software to enable services like music-on-demand and real-time audio broadcasting over networks, it said.
Initial customers include Camelot Corp , maker of the DigiPhone Internet telephony software, Isochrone, a developer of Internet communications software applications, and Soundprint Media Center, a provider of Internet services for the public radio broadcasting industry.
"We're capitalizing on a more than a decade of Bell Laboratories software research and development in packet technologies to bring Internet telephony to the level of quality people are accustomed to," said elemedia President Joe Mele.
Packet technologies refers to the standard method of sending data over networks by breaking it into small packages of electronic bits on the sender's end of a transmission and reassembling the packages on the receiving end.
However, the packet-transmission method has severe limitations when used to send real-time voice or video images.
