Supreme Court Grants Review in Important Voting Rights Act Case from Bench Memos by Roger Clegg The Supreme Court announced this afternoon that it is granting review in a case that challenges the constitutionality of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. This is an important issue: This is the provision in the Act that requires certain “covered jurisdictions” — mostly but not exclusively in the Deep South — to get permission from the federal government before making any voting-related changes in laws and procedures. Its principal use these days is to require racially gerrymandered, segregated voting districts.
