Perhaps, but the primaries didn't cause Romney to lose the election.

Millions spent by a disgusting, lying Obama campaign, coupled with carefully planned flip-flops and other cynical tactics designed to carve out specific constituencies. A liberal media willing to do anything to support their candidate. And finally, a magnificent data mining & management operation.

It had little, if anything, to do with the primaries. The primary process was brutal, but at the end of the day, it provided only a little fodder; had the primaries not provided it, something else would have.
