Not sure yet. Possibly. An interesting thing about Punjabi Pakistan tweeters is that they seem to be universally nasty. I know that's not the case of the people as in even Punjabi areas there has been good talk and action after her shooting, so I'm not sure of why on twitter. Pashtun and Balochistan mostly there love her and what she stands for. ISI is so powerful. I don't know if that's others in Pakistan are afraid to post. Also, though, until these connections, I had no idea of the conflict between the groups, which aren't simply some 'tribal' conflicts. Pashtun and Baloch were taken over by Pakistan and consider themselves occupied. I don't know why I didn't know that or seems to me hardly anyone I know does. For one, puts a whole other spin on things when people there sneer at the U.S. for being imperialist. Pot and kettle and all that.
But,yes, I think in Pashtun area she is a tipping point, and she's not alone among girls there, or girls with father's like she has, and that spills over into Afghanistan.
India could make all the difference but that will soooooo piss off Pakistan. Going to be interesting times.
People in Balochistan are very active on twitter. It really is an amazing tool. The Taliban, per se, and the attacks on and treatment of women aren't their issue in the same way, but I've seen talk of Malala as a source of inspiration. |
