"Question: What is wrong with the concept of government operating at a slight profit?"

In order to do this gov has to provide a good or service that the public wants to buy, and is willing to pay more than it costs. I'm fine with that in theory but if I have to buy the product and I have to pay a price that insures government a profit (whether by taxes or fees or directly), is government meeting the requirements or forcing me to do things I would not otherwise do in order to appear to make a profit.

And there is no incentive to hold costs down, no price feedback, no competition, to spur improvement.

If you can find government employees who can provide a good or service at a price enough people are willing to pay and make money at it, great. I doubt those people exist.
