SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Compressent (Nasdaq: CSNT) today announced that Eric Hamilton, former Chairman of the JPEG Committee, has joined Compressent as Chief Scientist.

Hamilton has spent 20 years in the still picture and digital video industries with four Silicon Valley start-up companies; two of which he founded. Most recently he managed firmware development at C - Cube Microsystems for a family of MPEG-2 Audio/Video decoders targeted for set-top boxes and other broadcast applications.

From 1992 to 1995, Hamilton served as Convenor of the ISO Working Group JTC1/SC29/WG1, "Coding of Still Pictures," and Chairman of JPEG, the Sub Group responsible for standardization of color and gray-scale image compression and coding. He provided leadership during a period in which the committee published the first three International Standards commonly known as "JPEG." The JPEG standard is widely used on the Internet and is the basis of the international color fax standard.

"Eric's highly visible position in the image compression standards community attracted our attention," said Abe Ostrovsky, Compressent's CEO and Chairman. "Having recently released our premier product, ChromaFax, the first standards-based color fax software for Windows 95, we are thrilled that he is joining us to expand our work in the areas of color compression and trans-mission. His talent and experience will be showcased in future Compressent products."

Compressent develops, licenses and markets color facsimile software and compression technologies. Its premier product, ChromaFax, is state-of-the-art color fax software for Windows 95 users in the home, small office and OEM markets. Compressent was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in San Jose, California. Information about the company and its products can be found at www.compressent.com.
