The key is how many of those Apps did you pay or would you be willing to pay for. A few of the Apps you mentioned like the clock and calender comes free and standard on a lot of smartphones.

I was looking at some Apps on the Apple iPhone market and someone was complaining that a developer would deign to actually charge $4.99 for an App as opposed to $1.99.

Unless it is a very well selling App or you can get people to pay for upgrades you ofteneasily can't cover the development cost. An App if you pay the salaries of professional developer can easily still be a few hundred thousand dollars even for a simple App with the expected amount of flash. That means the margins are pretty thin even if you get a 1 million dedicated users. Keep in mind a lot of people download an App and don't use it beyond trial period. Having lots of downloads does not mean much.
